At Ramos Center, we pride ourselves in offering a variety of pain management solutions. Our goal is to have long-lasting solutions for all of our patients, whatever their needs may be. For this reason, we offer Trigger Point Injections (TPI). This treatment is intended to help our patients suffering from targeted muscle pain or spasms. The symptoms can be a side effect of multiple conditions including:

  • Fibromyalgia
  • Myofascial Pain Syndrome
  • Chronic Pain Syndrome
  • Acute or Repetitive Injury

Trigger points can make everyday activities difficult and uncomfortable. Trigger points are known to cause severe neck, shoulder, and back pain. They have also been linked to debilitating, chronic headaches.

Trigger point injections can be administered by any trained and certified doctor. This procedure is usually conducted while the patient is either laying on their side or on their stomach. The doctor will locate the trigger point and mark the spot appropriately. The doctor will use a local anesthetic to numb the area so the patient can stay in relative comfort. The injection is administered and a small bandage will be placed over the injection site. The trigger point injection procedure will typically take less than 10 minutes.

Medications vary based on the patient’s needs. Oftentimes, trigger point injections contain lidocaine (Xylocaine) or Bupivacaine (Marcaine). Trigger point injections can also contain corticosteroid that may or may not be mixed with anesthetics.

Side Effects

The most common side effect is mild discomfort around the injection site. This can be easily treated with Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Advil (ibuprofen). It can also be helpful to apply heat and ice to the affected area. This pain is normal and should resolve itself within the week after the trigger point injection.

If corticosteroid was used in the injection there is a small risk of developing an indent beneath the skin. This is caused by the steroid which can shrink the fat cells in the surrounding area. This is an uncommon side effect and will not occur when pure anesthetic is used.

Lastly, there are side effects that are extremely rare but can be associated with any treatment that involves an injection.

Bleeding – Injections infrequently cause bleeding. If the patient notices any bleeding through the bandages or have continued to bleed for longer than 30 minutes, it is advised to contact your doctor.

Infection- Infections can be a cause for concern when getting any type of injection. If the patient notices that the injection site is sore, red, oozing, or they have a fever, the doctor should be contacted right away.
