Have you been feeling down? Many people underestimate how their mood can affect their daily life. Depression does not discriminate by age, gender, or race and can have a huge impact on you and your loved ones. It is estimated that around 16 million Americans suffer from major depression characterized by feeling lost, empty, tired, guilty, self-conscious, and helpless. It can cause you to lose interest in daily life and in return, will make you want to seclude yourself and hide from close friends and family who love you and and want to help.
At Ramos Center, we believe that mental health directly correlates to your physical health. Our team of professional doctors, therapists, and nutritionists are here to help you get your life back and start living everyday to the fullest.
In a recent study performed by Columbia University Medical Center, they found a connection between a diet high in refined carbs, and depression in postmenopausal women. This research is still in the beginning phases within the medical community but as more studies are released, we are seeing how the food we put into our bodies affect us in substantial ways both positive and negative.
What are Refined Carbohydrates?
Refined Carbohydrates are the after product of processed whole grain foods. Many whole based grain products go through a refining process that essentially strips all fiber and natural nutrients from the original grain. Some of the most common examples of refined products include:
- Bread– Most breads found at the grocery store are made with enriched or bleached flour. If you looking for a better choice, select the 100% whole grain bread instead.
- Rice/ Pasta– The most commonly found rice is white rice, which is refined. And the same goes for pasta. Look for brown rice and whole wheat pasta as a substitute.
- Cereal– Sugary cereals, along with even some of the “healthy” brands of cereals, are made from refined grains. It is important to always look at the ingredient on the packaging so you can be fully aware of what is in the food bought for yourself and your family.
What are the Effects of Refined Carbs?
As we mentioned above, refined carbs have been stripped of almost all fiber, vitamins and minerals by the time you ingest them. Because refined carbs are stripped of fiber, they are digested through your body very quickly, which in turn will leave you with a high glycemic index. When you ingest refined carbs, they are considered empty calories, meaning they aren’t providing your body with anything to use (like protein, or fiber) and are immediately turned into sugar.
Refined carbs will lead to rapid spikes in blood sugar and insulin levels after meals. These spikes in blood sugar have become associated with weight gain and the study performed at Columbia found that women who had progressively higher levels of sugar also had higher instances of depression.
