Although you may know you need physical therapy, you may still have questions before making your appointment, so we have compiled some of the most common questions below in the hopes of giving you the answers you need.
How much does physical therapy cost?
The cost of physical therapy depends on a number of factors, and although it’s not necessarily cheap, it is usually a more affordable alternative to surgery. Ultimately, the cost of physical therapy depends on how many visits you need and the services you receive.
There is good news if you’re insured though. Under the Affordable Care Act, marketplace health insurance plans are required to cover rehabilitative services as long as they’re medically necessary. Although this doesn’t mean that your physical therapy will be automatically covered by your insurance plan, it does mean that there’s a good chance that it will be.
If you do have insurance, you have to be mindful of other costs just as your co-pay, co-insurance, or deductible. Keep in mind that your overall costs will go up if you need multiple physical therapy visits. You may be able to negotiate a payment plan with your physical therapist, or it may be possible for you to do more exercises at home and visit your physical therapist less often to alleviate some of the costs.
At the Ramos Center, we accept most major health insurance plans including all Blue Cross/Blue Shield plans and Medicare. If you would like to know more about the health insurance plans we accept prior to your appointment, you can call our office and we would be happy to assist you.
How do you know if you should go to physical therapy?
If you suffer from chronic pain, conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, or arthritis, pain from a new or old injury, or are recovering from surgery, physical therapy could be right for you. Physical therapy is a non-invasive medical treatment that focuses on managing, healing, and preventing injuries and disabilities. However, physical therapists say that everyone can benefit from physical therapy, at least to some degree. Athletes, for example, may prevent injury through physical therapy.
If you’re not sure you need or would benefit from physical therapy, however, you can speak to your primary care physician. Although you don’t need a referral from your regular doctor, he or she can likely give you some good advice if you think you may need physical therapy.
How often should you go to physical therapy?
How many sessions you may need is entirely dependent on your diagnosis and your unique needs. Essentially, your physical therapist will work with you to establish your current condition and provide you with a treatment plan and recommendations for how many sessions you will need. If you need fewer or more sessions than recommended is based on your progress through physical therapy. Sometimes, adjustments need to be made.
After each session, your physical therapist will evaluate your progress and give you recommendations for future sessions. You may need several visits a month and annual follow-ups for several years before you feel confident that you don’t need physical therapy anymore. Some people require occasional physical therapy throughout their lives.
At Ramos Center, our team of expert physical therapists is dedicated to providing you with a personalized rehabilitation program to reach realistic goals that have effective and long-lasting results.
