There are so many factors to chronic pain to deal with that it can be hard to know where to seek help, and who can deliver reliable results. At the Ramos Center for Interventional and Functional Medicine, we want you to know that our doctors are committed to thoroughly addressing each aspect of your chronic pain with compassion and expertise.
What is your approach to pain management?
At the Ramos Center, our approach to pain management is holistic and multimodal. By holistic, we mean that we want to treat you as an entire person—physical, mental, social, and emotional—rather than just a specific area of your body that is in pain. Thus, our approach is multimodal because of the variety of treatments offer, ranging from physical therapy and spinal cord stimulation to cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and hypnotherapy!
We also provide addiction services to those who have been the victim of doctors that have irresponsibly prescribed an unnecessary amount of opiate medication for pain relief. Our addiction services form the interventional aspect of our discipline at the Ramos Center. We can manage your medication to wean those who have become addicted to opiate pain medication off of opiates. We also provide counseling support to give you a space to be heard and to help you work through the psychological effects of addiction and chronic pain.
We don’t want to provide a band-aid solution for your chronic pain at the Ramos Center for Interventional and Functional Pain Medicine. Instead, we want to address every aspect of your life that contributes to your chronic pain and has been affected by it. By doing so, we hope to help you thrive as a whole individual!
What can you do for failed knee or hip surgeries?
We understand how discouraging it can be to go through an invasive procedure without positive results! When you opt for surgery, it is always done so with the thought that you will be fixing the problem with a no-nonsense procedure, despite the risk of surgical complications. So, when surgery fails to do what it promised, you might feel as if you are always doomed to have chronic knee or hip pain. However, at the Ramos Center for Interventional and Functional Pain Medicine, we are happy to let you know that that is not the case! We have a reliable procedure for failed knee and hip pain that are non-invasive and highly effective, known as radiofrequency ablation (RFA).
Radiofrequency ablation heats the targeted nerve tissue through electric currents that are produced by radio waves. In so doing, RFA decreases the pain signals from that specific area. For hip pain, RFA interrupts the pain signals that stem from the femoral and obturator nerves. When either of those nerves is compressed, they cause intense pain in the hip joint. For knee pain, RFA targets the genicular nerves found above and below the knee cap.
Radiofrequency ablation is a two-step process. Under local anesthetic, your doctor will insert a tiny needle into the exact targeted area through the guidance of an X-ray, a process known as fluoroscopy. The first portion of this procedure consists of a diagnostic joint nerve block, in which the anesthetic will be used to test your response. If you experience sufficient pain relief, your doctor will proceed to the next step. The second part of the process is the therapeutic aspect, in which your doctor will perform radiofrequency ablation to the specific joint nerve in question. If the procedure is successful, you should experience pain relief and have restored functional mobility for at least three months, and as long as two years.
