Intrathecal Baclofen Therapy (ITB)
Fighting cancer takes strength and courage. Having the strength and courage to fight may seem much harder if you are also battling muscle stiffness, spasms, and pain. At Ramos Center, we offer cancer patients targeted drug therapy treatments using the ITB Therapy (Intrathecal Baclofen Therapy) pump system to help ease these symptoms so you can continue your fight in relative comfort.
ITB is a targeted drug therapy that distributes pain medication directly from a subdermal pump into the intrathecal space in your spine. ITB Therapy delivers Lioresal® Intrathecal, a liquid form of baclofen, will be released at a steady pace to relieve your symptoms. As a result of the drug being delivered directly into the intrathecal space, you will only need a small dose of medication in order to alleviate the pain. The targeted release will also help minimize the side effects that often accompany oral pain medications.
Here are some of the benefits associated with ITB Therapy:
Direct Distribution– Medication is administered to the specific area that is affected by pain.
High Efficiency– Because it is directly administered, the medication will work faster and longer in the area experiencing pain, stiffness, or spasms.
Less Frequent Dosing– You will not have to administer the medication as many times as you would in conventional drug delivery for the desired results.
Minimal Side Effects– Because the drug is being targeted to one area of the body, you will not feel the harsh side effects throughout your body.
Lower Dosing Tolerance– Your body will have a lower tolerance overall and you will not need to frequently increase the dosage of medication.
At Ramos Center, we have an in-house licensed Mental Health Counselor. Her job is to help our patients combat their pain through behavioral therapy. The various forms of therapy offered includes:
- Stress Management
- Deep Muscle Relaxation
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
These forms of therapy will teach patients new ways to deal with their physical pain, while also aiding in their mental health. In these therapy programs, our overall goal is to show our patients the connection between the mind-to-body interplay. To be more specific, this is the connection between physical pain and depression, anxiety, anger, and fear. These emotions are just some of the challenges that life with cancer pain may present.
