What is Dorsal Root Ganglion Spinal Cord Stimulation (DRG)?

Dorsal Root Ganglia is located right off the spinal cord within the epidural space and they contain a bundle of sensory nerve cells. Each part of the body has a correlating nerve root which is connected to the spinal cord and is in control of the communication to and from the brain. The DRG connects the nerve roots to the spinal cord and therefore has direct access to those messages being sent back and forth.

By applying electrical stimulation specifically to the DRG, the stimulation will interrupt and confuse pain signals before they can reach the brain.

What to Expect During the DRG Stimulation Procedure?

All patients will be administered a light dose of anesthesia (twilight anesthesia) to help them remain calm and comfortable. The procedure will be performed in two stages each one taking an hour and a half of time.

First Stage: Patient will be fitted for a one-week trial.

Second Stage: If the trial was a success, the patient will be fitted with a permanent implant.

Patient Reported Success

In a number of studies, patients said that they indeed felt pain relief and many were able to wean themselves off of oral medication. At 12 months post-op, many patients also reported improved mood scores and said they were able to do much more on a day-to-day basis. DRG Stimulation provides targeted pain relief and 81% of patients reported that they were happy and had significantly reduced pain.

Life-Changing Technology for Chronic Pain

Dorsal Root Ganglion (DRG) therapy is a non-opioid therapy designed to manage difficult-to-treat chronic pain in specific areas of the lower body, such as the foot, knee, or groin in patients with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). DRG therapy treats patients with neuropathic chronic pain associated with CRPS of the lower limbs. Pain in these areas is sometimes related to a cluster of nerves located on the outside of the spinal cord called the dorsal root ganglia (DRG). DRG was once thought to have no connection to pain, but researchers now know that this nerve bundle plays a key role in nerve pain for CRPS I and II patients.

DRG stimulation therapy involves surgically placing a stimulator that targets the dorsal root ganglion to relieve pain of the lower limbs due to CRPS. Individuals will have a hand-held iPod controller that changes the stimulation settings within prescribed limits. This new technology has made a significant difference in the treatment of chronic pain. Patients with chronic pain in a lower limb from CRPS experienced superior pain relief after one year with DRG stimulation.
