If you have recently taken a fall, had surgery, or are experiencing chronic pain, you may need to consider the benefits of physical therapy. Physical therapy (PT) is an extremely useful treatment that can help you get back on your feet and fight pain. It is important to note that physical therapy does not consist of one treatment and technique. Therefore, you need to find an experienced physical therapist who will be able to diagnose and guide you through the right physical therapy treatment.

Since we have a variety of patients who are treated at Ramos Center, we have a variety of physical therapy techniques to fit all of their needs. Below we will cover the differences in treatment plans and discuss how they can be beneficial.

Orthopedic physical therapists diagnose, manage and treat disorders and injuries of the musculoskeletal system. This form of physical therapy is also used for patients recovering from orthopedic surgery. This treatment will help if you recently experienced postoperative joints, sports injuries, or arthritis. General orthopedics will focus therapy on joint mobilization and strength training and often times, therapists will use heat/cold packs to help stimulate the muscles of the affected area.

Functional rehabilitation physical therapy is used to return the patient to the field of occupation in optimal condition. Oftentimes this treatment is used for athletes but it can also be used for a variety of different professions.

This treatment includes:

  • Strength
  • Flexibility
  • Agility training
  • Coordination of movement with specific occupational tasks

The overall goal of functional rehabilitation is to prepare the patient for daily activities or sports. This therapy is not used to address a patient’s symptoms but rather to rehabilitate the patient for returning to their everyday life. Functional rehabilitation should be started as soon as it is possible for the patient to return to daily activities.

Another type of physical therapy offered at Ramos Center is manual therapy. Manual therapy utilizes specific hands-on techniques, including but not limited to, manipulation/mobilization, and to diagnose and treat soft tissues or joint structures for the purpose of:

  • Easing pain
  • Increasing range of motion (ROM)
  • Reducing or eliminating soft tissue inflammation
  • Inducing relaxation
  • Improving contractile and non-contractile tissue repair
  • Facilitating movement; and improving function.

Manual therapy techniques may include manual lymphatic drainage, manual traction, massage, mobilization/manipulation, and passive range of motion.

Vestibular/Balance physical therapy, or vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT) is used to treat vestibular disorders. It is a specialized form of therapy intended to alleviate both the primary and secondary problems caused by these conditions. Patients will participate in an exercise-based program primarily designed to reduce vertigo and dizziness, gaze instability, and/or imbalance and falls.

Pain relief physical therapy is designed to relieve the patient from chronic pain. Each patient will receive a varying set of exercises and remedies to aid in pain relief efforts. At Ramos Center, we are sure to give each of our patients one-on-one attention. We will be sure to find a routine that fits your needs and alleviates your daily aches and pains.
