How (TDD) Targeted Drug Delivery Works

John (Cancer Pain)

Bessie (Cancer Pain)

If you suffer from chronic muscle stiffness, severe spasticity, or chronic pain due to:

  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Spinal Cord Injury
  • Brain Injury
  • Stroke
  • Cancer

Living with any of these conditions is difficult and having to deal with the onset of muscle stiffness, spasms, and pain, only make day-to-day life harder. At Ramos Center we offer our patients targeted drug therapy treatments using the ITB Therapy (Intrathecal Baclofen Therapy) pump system.

ITB is a targeted drug therapy that will distribute medication directly from a subdermal pump, into the area of your spinal cord that is affected by your condition. ITB Therapy delivers Lioresal® Intrathecal, a liquid form of baclofen, directly into the intrathecal space. Because the drug is delivered where it is needed, a much smaller dose is required. This helps minimize side effects that often accompany oral medication titration.

Here are some of the benefits that come with ITB Therapy:

Direct Distribution– Medication is admitted to the specific area that is affected by pain.

High Efficiency- Because it is directly distributed, the medication will work faster and longer in the area experiencing pain, stiffness, or spasms.

Less Frequent Dosing- You will not have to administer the medication as many times as you would in conventional drug delivery for the desired results.

Minimal Side Effects- Because the drug is being targeted to one area of the body, you will not feel the harsh side effects throughout your body.

Lower Dosing Tolerance- Your body will have a lower tolerance overall and you will not need to up the dosage of medication as frequently.

When tight, stiff muscles make movements difficult, everyday activities can be difficult, too. This condition, called severe spasticity, can happen with stroke, MS, cerebral palsy, brain injury, or spinal cord injury.

For you, the right treatment may be ITB Therapy℠ with Lioresal® Intrathecal (baclofen injection). Find out if a baclofen pump may help you turn “I wish” into “I can.”
